Ed Mergele has lived in Kendall County, Texas for over 50 years. Born in New Braunfels, he attended Texas Military Institute and Blinn College before serving three years of Navy/CG combat duty in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during World War II. He majored in History at the University of Texas at Austin, and was a staff writer for the first Handbook of Texas at UT. After retiring he earned his Ph.D. in History. He has published many military and southwest historical narrative books, newspaper articles, and short stories. Ed married his wife of 69 years, Mary Lou (Proctor), when he was recalled to the U. S. Navy for the Korean War. They are both descendants of Republic of Texas and British Colonial America immigrants and pioneers.
